Changing your address with DMV

The California Department of Motor Vehicles handles all address changes. You can change your address in three easy ways; online, in-person or by mail.

Once you complete the address change process with the DMV, the information on your CA drivers license, ID card, vehicle registration card, and/or vehicle certificate of title (pink slip) will all be updated BUT you will not receive new documents, e.g. drivers license with new address, registration card with new address. This is important to note because most often after changing your address you'll want your drivers license and vehicle registration card to reflect your new and correct address.

Change Address Online

Please note you may not change your address online if any of the following apply to you.

- Do not have a CA Driver License or California Identification Card
- Do not have a Social Security Number
- Do have a Commercial Driver License issued by the CA DMV but your residence address is out of state.
- Do have an Army Post Office or Fleet Post Office address.
- New address is outside of the United States

If you are not eligible to change your address online, you may use a DMV14 form (Change of Address) and either mail it in to the DMV address on the form or turn it in at a local DMV branch office.

Before you begin changing your address online, you must have your vehicle's or vessel's last issued registration card.

Change Address In-Person
Download the DMV14 here. Complete the form and visit a local DMV office. They will give you a change of address card which you may carry with you in case you need to show proof of your address change.

Change Address By Mail
Download the DMV14 here. Complete the form and mail it to: DMV CHANGE OF ADDRESS P.O. Box 942859 Sacramento, CA 94259-0001. Allow at least 4 weeks for the DMV to update your address information in their system.

Getting a drivers license or vehicle registration card with your new address

After you've changed your address on record with the DMV, you'll want to get documents and IDs with your updated address appearing on them. In order to do so you'll need to either order duplicate copies of which ever item you need or wait until the renewal time comes for the item in question. If you wait for the items to be renewed (for instance your drivers license is renewed every 5 years and your vehicle registration is renewed every year), you'll receive the renewal information at your new address and upon completion of the renewal, your new CA DL and/or registration card with your new address will be mailed to you.

If you choose to order a duplicate drivers license (must visit local DMV office), duplicate vehicle registration card (can be ordered online) or duplicate vehicle title with your new address, and you performed the change of address online, you'll want to wait around 10 days from the date which you performed the address change. If you changed address by mail, give it around 4 weeks. It takes a bit longer for the DMV to process mailed change of address forms.

As far as timelines and change of address requirements... When you move within California, you must notify the CA Department of Motor Vehicles within 10 days of moving. Note, changing your address with the California DMV is a free service and no change of address documentation is required. In other words, you do not need to have a utility bill or the like to show proof of your new address.
