Motorhome Needs CA Smog Check Exemption

Post Date: 2021-10-04 12:40:03

Question
Last year we applied for a temporary smog exemption using the form REG 5103 at a DMV office. We were told that we can only have the exemption for 2 years! We currently have the vehicle stored in Crowley, Texas. We are actually Australian Citizens and we had intended to spend at least 5 years touring the Eastern Seaboard in 3 to 4 month intervals each year. Please advise us on the situation. We would prefer not to drive to Blythe CA which is the nearest DMV from Texas! Thank you.

Answer

We understand your situation and can help. We have no information from the California Department of Motor Vehicles that smog exemptions have request limits or exemption time limitations. After all, it's impossible to predict the future, right?

Smog Check Exemption While on Vacation

That said, each year's registration renewal after your first smog exemption filing, will require a new smog check exemption filing. Note, the REG 5103 is intended to be used specifically as a "temporary" exemption - for a smog check- meaning the State of California wants you to complete the smog check as soon as possible, upon the motorhome's return to California; but is give you time until you are able to do so.

If you intend of getting a smog check soon but want to pay your registration renewal fees before the inspection, NeedTags can accept your payment and post fees with the DMV so that you don't incur late fees. This is assuming you won't be able to get the smog inspection before your motorhome's tags expire.

Should you want to file for a smog check exemption again, the complete renewal process can be done online through NeedTags as well. Simply email us your REG 5103 instead of mailing it to the DMV.

Submit your registration renewal through our online portal. Upon receipt of our confirmation email, reply back with your REG 5103 attachment. You may submit your REG 5103 as a scanned PDF document or a photo/image taken with your smartphone. Please ensure your REG 5103 is of high resolution and cropped neatly if submitting a photo/image. If any corrections are needed, we will contact you before the filing. See the quick guide link below to learn of the current filing fee for this service.
