Question
On which holidays is the California DMV closed? I've heard they are planning on extending their hours to help ease the long wait times. Will this include opening on state holidays, and if they do, will they be open regular business hours?

Answer

California DMV Holiday Hours

The last thing you want is to show up to a closed DMV field office. It is true, California is exploring different ways of lessening wait times, however opening on State Holidays is yet to be explored.

State DMV offices are generally closed on official State holidays, but open on business days that fall on the day before or day after a holiday (for example, Christmas Eve and New Years Eve). State DMV offices are generally open on religious holidays, such as Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Ramadan, Passover, and Good Friday, because these are not considered official State holidays.

The 12 Holidays DMV Offices in California are Closed

  • January 1 — New Year’s Day
  • Third Monday in January — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • February 12 — Lincoln’s Birthday
  • Third Monday in February — Washington’s Birthday
  • Last Monday in May — Memorial Day
  • July 4 — Independence Day
  • First Monday in September — Labor Day
  • Second Monday in October — Columbus Day
  • November 11 — Veterans Day
  • Fourth Thursday in November - Thanksgiving Day
  • Fourth Friday in November - The day after Thanksgiving
  • December 25 — Christmas
Note: DMV offices are closed on Sundays. Select field offices provide service on Saturdays but can close on holiday weekends. The total holiday days off equal fourteen (14) considering the DMV is closed the day after Thanksgiving, as well as the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Tip! An appointment at your local DMV office can help you save hours. We recommend checking with the DMV appointment scheduling system periodically to find time slots closer to your desired appointment date. They do receive cancellations which allow space to open up in between your current appointment.

We also recommend considering the option of going online or through a private registration service office to complete your DMV vehicle registration transaction. We explain some options below that will absolutely save you time and get you back in the holiday spirit if your registration issue is causing you any stress.

Alternatives to Visiting the DMV During the Holidays

DMV offices are operated by the State of California. But did you know that there are thousands of privately owned vehicle registration offices throughout California which are open during the holidays and are able to process DMV vehicle transactions? If you're pressed for time during the holidays, visiting a private vehicle registration office may be the answer. These offices have different holiday schedules from State DMV offices. While some vehicle registration offices follow a similar holiday schedule, most are open when State Department of Motor Vehicles are closed.

A. Online DMV Services are Open on Holidays

Though DMV field offices are closed during State holidays, DMV online services are available 24/7, and open during holiday hours, including Saturdays and Sundays. Simple vehicle registration renewal, registration replacement, and title transfer transactions can be completed online with ease. Visiting the DMV in person during the holidays can be avoided.

B. Vehicle Registration Offices Open on Holidays

Officially known as BPA (Business Partner Automation) providers, these privately owned businesses have been given authorization by the CA Department of Motor Vehicles to offer vehicle registration services to the public for a nominal fee. They provide the same services which you would find at state run DMV offices but without long lines, open on holidays, and with very few limitations as far as the types of vehicle registration transactions they can perform. They carry official DMV inventory and can provide same-day license plates, stickers, vehicle registration cards, OHV tags, and more. Visit a local vehicle registration office near you.
